my go-to smoothie – the ABC smoothie
It’s still pretty cold in Alberta but my body just craves this smoothie sometimes. I don’t get it either. But, if you’re anything like me and just want a good, filling smoothie once in a while, this is your jam. Its filled with almond butter, blueberries, collagen and much more. That’s why I called it the ABC smoothie. Has a good ring to it yeah? I have included an extra list of some superfoods you can add to this smoothie to help increase the nutritional value. I tend to add 2-3 of them in mine and they’re always tasty.
ABC smoothie
Ingredients
1/2 banana – see note below *
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
2 heaping spoonfuls of almond butter
1/2 cup almond milk – I use unsweetened original
1/2 cup cold water – you can slowly add more if you want a more thin consistency
1 scoop collagen powder
2 pinches cinnamon powder
2 pinches pink sea salt
1 scoop of fiber of choice – you can use ground flaxseed or see below for what I use *
2-3 ice cubes
Directions
In a high powered blender, add all ingredients except for the cold water and start blending on low. While you blend, slowly add cold water and increase the blend speed. Only add as much water as you want until you get the consistency you like.
I personally love my smoothies not-so-thick so I can drink it through my straw. However, if I am making a smoothie bowl, I make them as thick as possible. Depending on how you like your smoothies, I would adjust the liquid to that.
Additional superfoods – the smoothie is great without these but I love adding a few good superfoods to my smoothie to increase nutritional value
2 tbsp hemp hearts – a nice extra protein boost
Protein power – I use 1/2 a scoop. I recommend using a peanut butter + chocolate flavor in this
Avocado – 1/4 – 1/2 avocado for a healthy fat. I haven’t tried it in this smoothie yet but i’m sure it’s 10/10.
Hemp oil – I love using 1-2 tbsp of Manitoba Harvest hemp oil in my smoothies
Rolled oats – I like to add 1/4 cup of plain rolled oats to help bulk up my smoothies. I started doing this after trying Oranj smoothies that had oats in them (and I LOVED them!).
Notes:
Banana- I peel the banana, and chop it into small chunks. Then I add these pieces to a ziploc bag, squeeze out all of the excess air, zip it up and freeze it. I know this sounds simple, but I didn’t do this for the longest time and I ended up having to use much more ice in smoothie recipes AND I continuously had bananas go bad on me.
Fiber – I used to use ground flaxseed but recently switched over to Renew Life – Fiber Smart and I love it. I bought it a few weeks ago and have already noticed a difference.
A few of you have asked me which brands I like to use for smoothie ingredients. These are not sponsored.
Collagen – Organika
Almond milk – Califia or Earths Own
Almond butter – Nuttin’ but spreads – I rotate between brands!
Cinnamon powder – I recently bought mine from Silk Road Spice Merchants and it’s AMAZING.
