The ‘Queen Of Greens’ Smoothie
“How many servings of greens can I fit into a smoothie and still have it taste good?”. This is often something I question when I made a greens smoothie ha-ha. The answer is always: AS MANY AS I CAN!
Building a well-balanced greens smoothie is very simple and I plan on doing a blog post with each step and different food options for each. In the mean time, you can follow this:
You can pick from the options (or add a few of each!)
Base: this can be water, cashew milk, almond milk, coconut milk, coconut h2o, or any other liquid you prefer.
Veggies: spinach, kale (take stems out!), cucumbers, chard, parsley, beet greens, beets, bok choy, or any other greens.
Fruit: frozen pineapple, mango, banana, apple, orange, avocado, berries or melon. I try to add more veggies than fruit. Although it’s a better source of sugar than other options, it still has sugar and I try to limit fruits to a few servings a day, nothing too aggressive lol.
Healthy Fats: Ground flax-seed, chia seeds, coconut butter (a bit thicker than coconut oil- like this one), avocado, brain octane oil, MCT or Brain Octane (like this one from Bulletproof) nuts, butters, ect.
Additional Super foods: This can be pretty much anything you have on hand. Bee pollen, collagen powder (I use this kind), spirulina, matcha (the grand cru from DAVIDsTEA is amazing), maca, hemp hearts (I’ve used this kind for years and love them!), ect.
Try using some of these ingredients when you build your next smoothie. You will need to play around with the amounts of each that you like so that it’s your preferred flavor and thickness.
Now… for this Queen of Greens smoothie!
The Queen Of Greens Smoothie
1 cup almond milk
1/2 cup (or more) h2o
1 banana
1 – 1.5 cups frozen mango
1/2 avocado
2-3 handfuls fresh spinach
1 handful fresh kale – stems taken out
Small chunk cucumber
2-3 tbsp hemp hearts
1 tbsp ground flax seed
Additional: 1/2 tsp spirulina powder + 1 small scoop collagen
Directions: Blend it all up. My tip is to add a small amount of liquid to start, then add more if you need it. If you don’t have a vitamix, try blending the leafy greens with the liquid first, then add everything else. I found that with a regular blender, it worked better that way for breaking up the leafy green chunks. With the vitamix, its okay to just add everything. (That machine is a beast ha-ha)
Enjoy!
