Creamy Cocoa Coffee + Top 5 Coffee Superfoods
About 6 years ago, I used to live off of coffee. It had a really awful effect on me at the time because I was working way too much and not eating healthy AT ALL. So, I stopped drinking it, replaced it with matcha and took more control of my health. After that, I didn’t really drink coffee for a few years besides the occasional cup. I didn’t really need it or want it. Fast forward to this year. I now enjoy matcha almost everyday still (my favorite) as well as a good, fresh, cup of coffee or coffee elixir. I don’t care for plain coffee as much as I do for coffee mixed with lots of super foods. When I add in healthy fats, natural fibrous sweeteners (only sometimes), healthy proteins and nourishing spices, I feel way better after drinking a cup. When I drink plain coffee, I don’t feel as good. That’s why I have been creating different recipes in the kitchen with my vitamix (it makes it SO much easier and faster!) for people who might love coffee but don’t feel like they are getting any health benefits while drinking it.
Creamy Nourishing Cocoa Coffee
1 cup organic freshly brewed coffee (I use my french press + organic coffee from the health store I work at)
1/2 – 1 cup boiling water + 1/2 cup almond milk
1 tsp MCT oil
1-2 dates pitted (depending on how sweet you like it)
1/2 scoop of collagen powder
1/2 tbsp Kick Start powder (by Harmonic Arts – see below for more info)
Sprinkle of ground cinnamon
1-2 dashes of pink sea salt
1 tbsp cashew butter (optional – I added this to make it even more creamy)
Directions: If you are using a vitamix, add everything to it and blend on high until hot and frothy. If you aren’t using one, simply add all ingredients to a saucepan and heat up while whisking. Then add it to a heat-allowing blender and blend up until frothy.
Kickstart powder is a super food powder that I bought from my work. It has chaga mushroom, yerba mate, sarsaparilla, maca, roasted dandelion and guarana.
My top 5 super-foods to add to coffee (and make it into an elixir-style drink)
1. Harmonic Arts “super-powders”. These include Kickstart, Elevate, Activate, Engage, Macuna Matcha-ta and 5 mushroom Dual Extract. I like to add some of these to coffee (or anything for that matter) because it can help add in nourishing ingredients like medicinal mushrooms, pure cocoa, spices and healing herbs.
2. High Quality Collagen Powder. This can add in a healthy kick of protein and can help your skin look firmer & smoother as well as help make your nails stronger.
3. Spices. I’ve been experimenting with adding in different spices like turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, ect. I generally don’t add too much of any spice because I find it ends up tasting too strong, but I like adding a dash or two. My favorites are turmeric & cinnamon – they are super warming and cozy.
4. Coconut oil or MCT oil. Coconut oil has many benefits (as most of you probably know ha-ha) that include helping increase HDL (good cholesterol) & help convert LDL (bad cholesterol) into good cholesterol. Coconut oil is also anti-bacterial. anti-fungal, and anti-viral which can help support your immune system. MCT oil (medium-chain) are great because they are digested easily and can be burned by your body for energy or fuel instead of storing as fat. MCT can help balance hormones, give you more energy and possibly improve your mood. I like adding this to coffee and other hot drinks when I can!
5. Maca Powder. I am borderline obsessed with maca and its health benefits. Maca is high in amino acids, fatty acids, calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc and B-vitamins. It may help support the endocrine system and help support the adrenals and thyroid. Maca can also help with mood improvements which can help with libido in some people. I find it helps with my mood and energy when I drink it regularly.
Note: I am not affiliated with the company, Harmonic Arts. I just really love their products!
